Acquasparta is a small hill town in the south of Umbria, between Todi and Terni in the Province of Terni. It is known for its mineral water springs and for a historic centre that still has much of its Renaissance character.
The Town and Its Surroundings
The centre is dominated by Palazzo Cesi, the residence of Federico Cesi, founder of the Accademia dei Lincei, who hosted Galileo here. Narrow streets of stone houses run inside the old walls, and the surrounding countryside is a mix of olive groves, oak woods and farmland at the foot of the Martani hills.
Close by are the ruins of the Roman town of Carsulae, on the old Via Flaminia. Avigliano Umbro and Montecastrilli lie to the west, and Terni is the nearest city.
