Property for Sale in Alassio, Liguria
Alassio is a seaside town on the Riviera di Ponente, the western stretch of the Ligurian coast, in the Province of Savona. It sits on a wide bay with one of the longest sandy beaches in Liguria, and the property for sale here is a mix of apartments near the sea and villas on the hills behind the town.
The Town and the Seafront
The old town runs parallel to the beach, along the Budello, a narrow pedestrian street of shops, cafés and restaurants with alleys leading straight down to the sand. The Muretto, a wall covered with ceramic tiles signed by famous visitors, is one of the town’s best-known sights.
Alassio has long been popular with British visitors, and in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries an English community built villas, a church and a library here. The seafront promenade is busy in summer and pleasant for walks in the mild winter months.
The Hills and the Coast Around Alassio
Behind the town, the hills rise steeply with olive terraces, Mediterranean gardens and villas looking down over the bay. Offshore lies the small island of Gallinara, a nature reserve.
Along the coast, Laigueglia is a small fishing village just to the south, and Albenga, with its medieval towers and historic centre, is a short distance to the north. Inland, the valleys lead to quiet hill villages surrounded by olive groves and vineyards.
Property for Sale in Alassio
Apartments make up slightly more than half of the listings, including a penthouse, many with sea views and terraces, while the rest are villas with gardens on the hills overlooking the bay. This is a premium market: most homes are priced between about €1.3 million and €1.6 million, and the most exclusive villa reaches several million euros. Many apartments are relatively compact, with one or two bedrooms.
Everyday Life and Getting There
Alassio is a year-round town with supermarkets, schools, a weekly market and medical services, and a hospital at Albenga. The mild climate attracts visitors in winter as well as summer.
The station is on the coastal railway between Genoa and Ventimiglia, with trains to Genoa and on to the French border. The A10 motorway is reached at Albenga. The nearest airports are Genoa and Nice, with Turin as an alternative.
Buying in Alassio
Ligurian hillsides are steep, so check access by car, parking, and the condition of terraces and retaining walls, and ask whether the area is classed at risk of landslides. Near the sea, look for damp, salt damage and the state of the building’s facade and balconies.
Apartments are usually in condominiums with shared costs, so ask for the annual charges and planned works. Before you sign, have a geometra examine the cadastral plans and the planning records at the comune and confirm that everything matches the property.
