Property for Sale in Altopascio, Tuscany
Altopascio is a small town in the plain between Lucca and Florence, in the Province of Lucca. It has a long history as a stop on the Via Francigena, the medieval pilgrim route to Rome, and the homes listed here are villas and a farmhouse in the surrounding countryside.
The Town and Its Surroundings
The town grew around a hospice for pilgrims run by the Knights of the Tau, and its bell tower still houses La Smarrita, the bell that was rung in the evenings to guide travellers lost in the marshes and woods. The old centre is compact, and Altopascio is also known for its bread.
To the north, the hill village of Montecarlo is known for its wines, and Porcari and Capannori lie on the way to Lucca.

Everyday Life and Getting There
Altopascio has supermarkets, schools, a pharmacy and everyday services, and Lucca is close by for hospitals and a wider choice of shops.
The town has its own exit on the A11 motorway between Florence and the coast, and a station on the railway between Lucca and Florence. Pisa airport is the nearest, with Florence airport also within easy reach.
Buying in Altopascio
Much of the land around Altopascio is flat and was once marshy, so ask about drainage and whether the plot lies in a flood-risk zone. Check the condition of older farm buildings and their roofs.
Make sure the geometra you appoint confirms that the villa, garages and any annexes appear correctly in the cadastre and that their planning history at the comune is complete.
