Property for Sale in Arcidosso, Tuscany
Arcidosso is a mountain town on the western slopes of Monte Amiata, in the east of the Province of Grosseto. Surrounded by chestnut and beech woods, it is cooler and greener than the Maremma below, and the homes for sale are country properties with land rather than houses in town.
The Town and Monte Amiata
The old centre climbs to the Aldobrandeschi castle, whose tower overlooks a tight cluster of stone streets, arches and small churches. Around the town, the chestnut woods produce the Amiata chestnut, celebrated each autumn, and footpaths lead towards Monte Labbro and the summit of the Amiata, an extinct volcano with ski runs in winter.
The comune also takes in the villages of Montelaterone and Stribugliano. Lower down to the west, the wine country of Cinigiano stretches towards the Ombrone valley.
Property for Sale in Arcidosso
What is for sale here is a small group of rural properties: a farmhouse, a villa and a large country estate with many bedrooms and extensive land. Prices start below €500,000 and climb steeply, with the estate offered at several million euros.
Everyday Life and Getting There
Arcidosso and neighbouring Castel del Piano together provide shops, supermarkets, schools and medical services for the Amiata area. In summer the mountain is a cool retreat from the coast, and Grosseto is the place for hospitals and larger shopping.
There is no railway on the mountain, so a car is needed. Florence, Pisa and Rome Fiumicino are the closest major airports.
Buying in Arcidosso
Winters on the Amiata bring snow and ice, so look at how a country house is heated and insulated, and whether the access road is kept clear in bad weather. Rural properties may depend on springs or wells and septic tanks rather than mains services.
Woodland, pasture and farm buildings are governed by Tuscan rural planning rules. A geometra who works in the area should confirm the boundaries, the cadastral entries and the planning history of every building before you commit.
