Property for Sale in Bagni di Lucca, Tuscany
Bagni di Lucca is a spa town in the wooded valley of the Lima, a tributary of the Serchio, north of Lucca in the Province of Lucca. It has a long connection with British visitors, and today the comune and its many hamlets are home to a sizeable community of foreign residents.
The Town and the Valley
The town grew around its hot springs, and in the nineteenth century it was a fashionable resort for European aristocracy and writers including Shelley, Byron and the Brownings. Reminders of that era include the English cemetery, the Anglican church, the old casino and the Ponte delle Catene, a chain suspension bridge over the Lima.
The comune spreads across a string of villages on the steep, chestnut-covered slopes around the valley. Downstream, the Serchio valley leads past Borgo a Mozzano to Lucca, and Pescaglia lies in the hills to the south-west.

Everyday Life and Getting There
The town has shops, bars, restaurants, a pharmacy and schools, with hospital services in Lucca and Castelnuovo di Garfagnana.
Bagni di Lucca is on the railway between Lucca and Aulla through the Serchio valley, though the station is in Fornoli, below the town. Pisa airport is the nearest, with Florence as an alternative.
Buying in Bagni di Lucca
Mountain hamlets can be reached by narrow, winding roads, so check winter access and whether the house gets sun in the colder months. Near the river, look for damp and ask about flood history; on slopes, check retaining walls and landslide risk.
Large historic properties call for a geometra to examine the cadastral and planning records carefully, as outbuildings and later additions are often undocumented.
