Canelli is a wine town in the Belbo valley, in the south of the Province of Asti, where Moscato vineyards meet the hills of the Langa Astigiana. It is the historic home of Italian sparkling wine, and it offers some of the most affordable homes in the UNESCO wine area.
The Town and the Wine Cellars
Beneath the town run the so-called underground cathedrals, vast cellars carved into the hillside by the great wine houses, which are part of the UNESCO-listed vineyard landscapes of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato. Above the modern centre, the old quarter of Villanuova climbs the hill towards the castle.
The surrounding hills are covered with vineyards and small villages. Calosso lies to the north-west, Cassinasco and Rocchetta Palafea are in the hills to the south, and San Marzano Oliveto and Nizza Monferrato are close by.
