Property for Sale in Carrara, Tuscany
Carrara is a city at the foot of the Apuan Alps in the north-west of Tuscany, in the Province of Massa-Carrara. It is famous around the world for its white marble, quarried from the mountains above the city for more than two thousand years.
The City and the Marble Mountains
The historic centre has a Romanesque cathedral with a marble facade, the Accademia di Belle Arti and streets lined with workshops of marble sculptors. Above the city, the quarry basins cut white scars into the mountains, and the village of Colonnata is known for its lardo, cured in marble vats.
Towards the sea, Marina di Carrara has a busy port, from which marble is shipped, and sandy beaches. Massa and Montignoso lie to the south along the coast, and the Lunigiana valleys, including Fivizzano, are inland to the north.

Buying in Carrara
Homes close to the quarries or the marble roads may be affected by heavy lorry traffic and dust, so visit at different times of day. Hillside villas should be checked for access and slope stability, and coastal ones for damp.
A geometra can review the cadastral records and the comune’s planning archive, confirming that the property as built is the one described in the documents.
