Chiavari is a coastal town on the Gulf of Tigullio, on the Riviera di Levante east of Genoa, in the Province of Genoa. Unlike many resorts on this coast, it is a real working town with a large marina, a long seafront and a historic centre that remains busy all year.
The Town and the Coast
The old town is laid out on a regular grid of streets lined with stone arcades, full of shops, cafés and food stores. Chiavari gave its name to a famous light wooden chair, still made locally. The river Entella separates it from Lavagna, and behind the town the hills rise steeply with olive terraces and villas.
Along the coast to the west are Zoagli, Rapallo and Santa Margherita Ligure, with Portofino at the end of its promontory. To the east lies Sestri Levante.

The listings are mainly villas on the hills above town, many with sea views, along with an apartment close to the coast. Prices are high, from well over €1 million to more than €2 million.
Everyday Life and Getting There
Chiavari has a hospital, schools, supermarkets, a daily market and plenty of restaurants, so it works for full-time living. The seafront promenade and marina are the focus of town life.
The station is on the coastal railway between Genoa and La Spezia, with regular trains to both. The A12 motorway has an exit at Chiavari. Genoa airport is the nearest, with Pisa and Milan as alternatives.
Buying in Chiavari
Hillside villas often have steep access, narrow roads and limited parking, so visit at different times of day. Much of the coast is under landscape protection, which limits extensions and new structures, and some slopes are at risk of landslides. Before reaching an agreement, get a geometra to check that the house and its terraces match the cadastral records and that past works were legally authorised.
