Chiusi is an ancient hill town in the far south-east of the Province of Siena, close to the border with Umbria. Once one of the most powerful Etruscan cities, it overlooks the southern Val di Chiana and its own small lake, with Lake Trasimeno a short distance to the east.
The Town and Its Etruscan Past
The historic centre sits on the hill, with the cathedral of San Secondiano, the National Etruscan Museum and a network of underground tunnels that can be visited. Painted Etruscan tombs lie in the countryside nearby. Chiusi Scalo, the lower town around the station, is the modern commercial part.
Chianciano Terme and Montepulciano are to the north-west, and Sarteano and Cetona lie to the south-west. Castiglione del Lago, on Lake Trasimeno, is just across the Umbrian border.
