Desenzano del Garda is the largest town on the southern shore of Lake Garda, in the Province of Brescia. With its harbour, lakeside promenade and lively centre, it is a busy year-round town as well as a summer resort.
The Town and the Lake
The old port, lined with cafés and pastel houses, is the heart of the town, with the castle above it and the remains of a large Roman villa a few streets away. Beaches and parks stretch along the shore, and boats leave from the waterfront for Sirmione and the other lake towns.
Along the western shore, Padenghe sul Garda is a short drive north, and further up the lake Toscolano Maderno sits beneath steeper mountains. The hills behind Desenzano are known for Lugana white wine.

Everyday Life and Getting There

Desenzano del Garda station is on the main line between Milan and Venice, with fast trains to both, and the A4 motorway has an exit just outside town. Verona airport is the closest, with Brescia, Bergamo and the Milan airports also within reach.
