Foiano della Chiana is a hill town in the Valdichiana, in the south of the Province of Arezzo. It rises above the broad, fertile valley floor, with farmland, vineyards and the hills of Cortona on the horizon.
The Town and the Valdichiana
The old town covers a low hill, with lanes of brick and stone houses, several churches and a central square. Foiano is best known for its carnival, which claims to be the oldest in Italy and fills the town with allegorical floats each year. The flat land around it was drained centuries ago and is still intensively farmed, with Chianina cattle, cereals and vines.
Lucignano and Marciano della Chiana are close neighbours, while Cortona and its lower town of Camucia lie to the east across the valley.

The listings are mainly farmhouses and villas in the countryside, often large with many bedrooms and land, plus one commercial property. This is a higher-value segment of the market: most prices fall between about €700,000 and €2 million, with the largest estates going higher.
Everyday Life and Getting There
Foiano has supermarkets, schools, a weekly market and restaurants, and a large outlet shopping village lies just outside the town. Hospitals are in Nottola, near Montepulciano, and at Fratta, below Cortona.
The A1 motorway has its Valdichiana exit nearby, and the Florence to Rome railway stops at Camucia-Cortona and Terontola. Florence and Perugia airports are both within reach, with Rome and Pisa for more flights.

Large country properties often have barns, stables or annexes that have been converted over time, and farmland may carry agricultural contracts. On the valley floor, check drainage, as the land was once marshy.
