Laveno-Mombello is a lakeside town on the eastern, Lombard shore of Lake Maggiore, in the Province of Varese. It faces Verbania across the lake, with the Sasso del Ferro mountain rising directly behind.
The Town and the Lake
Laveno developed as a ferry port and was long known for its ceramics industry, remembered today in the ceramics museum at nearby Cerro. The waterfront has a promenade, a small harbour and cafés, while Mombello and the other hamlets lie on the slopes above. A cable lift climbs the Sasso del Ferro for walks and wide views of the lake and the Alps.
Along the shore, villas with gardens look across the water to the Piedmont side. Varese, with its own lake and the Sacro Monte, is inland to the south-east.

Laveno has two stations: one on the line to Varese and Milan, and one on the line along the lake towards Luino. Milan Malpensa airport is the closest, and Linate and Bergamo are further away.
