Property for Sale in Milan, Lombardy

Milan is the capital of Lombardy and of the Province of Milan, Italy’s financial and business centre and its capital of fashion and design. The homes for sale on this page are mainly apartments and penthouses in central districts, at prices that reflect one of the strongest property markets in the country.

The City Centre

The centre is organised around the Duomo, the Gothic cathedral, and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, which leads to La Scala opera house. Nearby are the Sforza Castle, the art collections of the Brera gallery, and Leonardo’s Last Supper in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie.

Housing in the centre is mostly in apartment blocks, from late nineteenth-century buildings with courtyards and stone staircases to post-war and contemporary towers.

The Neighbourhoods and Beyond

Each district has its own character. Brera is known for its galleries and narrow streets, the area between Via Montenapoleone and Via della Spiga for fashion, and Magenta and Porta Venezia for elegant residential buildings. The Navigli canals in the south-west have bars and restaurants along the water, while Porta Nuova and CityLife are newer districts with modern towers and public gardens, next to the older streets of Isola.

Outside the city, the lakes of Como and Maggiore are within reach for weekends, and one of the properties listed here is a historic estate in the countryside about 20 kilometres from Milan.

Apartments make up most of the listings, including a couple of penthouses with terraces, alongside a villa and a country estate. Most homes have two or three bedrooms, and prices are high: nearly all listings are above €1 million, many are around €1.5 million, and the most expensive approach €3.5 million.

Everyday Life and Getting There

Milan has excellent hospitals, universities and international schools, and an extensive network of metro, tram and bus lines. Its shops, restaurants, concerts and trade fairs keep the city busy all year.

Milano Centrale station has high-speed trains to Turin, Venice, Bologna, Florence, Rome and Naples. Linate airport is close to the city, Malpensa handles most international flights, and Bergamo airport offers more routes. Motorways lead to the lakes, the Alps, Turin and Venice.

Buying in Milan

Most apartments are in condominiums, so ask for the annual service charges, the minutes of recent meetings and details of any approved works such as façade or lift renovation. Check the energy class and the heating system, since older buildings can be expensive to heat.

A garage or parking space is often sold separately, and central Milan has a congestion charge zone, Area C, that affects daily use of a car. Ask a technician to confirm the apartment’s planning and cadastral conformity, which Milanese notaries will expect to see before the deed.
