Property for Sale in Montalto di Castro, Lazio
Montalto di Castro is a town in the far north-west of Lazio, in the Province of Viterbo, close to the border with Tuscany. Its comune stretches from the Tyrrhenian coast inland across the flat and gently rolling farmland of the Maremma.
The Town and the Coast
The old town sits on a low hill a few kilometres from the sea, with a castle and a small historic centre. Its coast includes the beaches of Marina di Montalto and, further north, the farming and seaside area of Pescia Romana, with wide sandy shores backed by dunes and pine woods.
The comune is also home to much of the archaeological park of Vulci, the site of an important Etruscan city, with its castle, bridge over the Fiora river and walking trails. Tarquinia lies to the south, and Capalbio and the Tuscan Maremma are just across the border to the north.

All of the homes listed are villas, typically with four bedrooms and land in the countryside or near the coast. These are high-value properties, priced from over €1 million to about €2 million.
Everyday Life and Getting There
The town has supermarkets, shops, schools and everyday services, while larger hospitals and shopping are in Tarquinia, Civitavecchia and Viterbo. The coast is busy in summer and quiet the rest of the year.
The Aurelia road runs along the coast towards Rome and Grosseto, and Montalto di Castro has a station on the railway between Rome and Pisa. Rome Fiumicino airport is the nearest major airport.
Buying in Montalto di Castro
Rural villas on the plain can be exposed to wind and occasional flooding, so check drainage and the water supply, which may come from a well. Near the coast, look at salt damage and ask about any coastal or archaeological restrictions on building.
A geometra familiar with the area should confirm that the villa, pool and outbuildings match the cadastral records and were built with the correct permits.
