Property for Sale in Montevarchi, Tuscany
Montevarchi is a market town in the upper Arno valley, the Valdarno, in the north-west of the Province of Arezzo. The town itself is busy and practical, while the hills on either side, rising towards the Chianti to the west and the Pratomagno to the east, hold villas and farmhouses with wide views.
The Town and Its Surroundings
The historic centre is built around a long main street and the collegiate church of San Lorenzo, and the town also has a palaeontological museum displaying fossils found in the valley. Outside the centre, the comune takes in hill villages and countryside planted with vines and olives.
Nearby towns along the valley include Terranuova Bracciolini and Bucine, while Loro Ciuffenna lies on the slopes of the Pratomagno. Arezzo is further up the valley to the south-east.
Property for Sale in Montevarchi
The homes for sale here are country villas, farmhouses and houses in the hills, rather than apartments in town. Prices are high: entry level is around €1 million, and the larger villas and estates are priced at several million euros.
Everyday Life and Getting There
Montevarchi has a full range of shops, supermarkets, schools and a hospital serving the Valdarno, as well as a weekly market. The Chianti wine roads are just over the hills, and Florence, Arezzo and Siena are all within reach.
The town has a station on the regional railway between Florence and Arezzo, and the A1 motorway is reached at the Valdarno exit. Florence airport is the nearest, with Pisa and Perugia as alternatives.
Buying in Montevarchi
High-value country homes deserve thorough due diligence: look at the condition of roofs and structure, the state of pools and gardens, and the cost of maintaining the grounds. If there is land, find out whether it is leased to a farmer.
For each building, have a geometra check the planning permits and cadastral data so that any discrepancy is resolved by the seller before the deed.
