Pigna is a medieval village in the upper Nervia valley, in the west of the Province of Imperia, inland from Ventimiglia and Bordighera. It is a place of stone houses, olive terraces and mountain views, close to the French border.
The Village and Its Surroundings
The old village is built in rings around its hill, with covered lanes, archways and stairways between tall stone houses. The church of San Michele, with its carved rose window, stands at the heart of the village.
Across the valley is Castel Vittorio, and downstream the Nervia valley leads to Dolceacqua, with its castle and stone bridge, and to the coast. Perinaldo lies on the ridge to the east. Above Pigna, the land climbs into the woods and mountains of the Ligurian Alps.

Everyday Life and Getting There
Pigna has a few shops and bars, and residents go down to Ventimiglia, Bordighera and Sanremo for supermarkets, schools and hospitals. The valley offers walking and the Ligurian coast is within reach, and the village is surrounded by olive groves producing oil from the Taggiasca olive.
The A10 motorway and the coastal railway run through Ventimiglia and Bordighera. Nice airport is the nearest, with Genoa as an alternative.
Buying in Pigna
Houses in the old village are often reached only on foot, so think about access and parking. A property beside the river should be checked for flood risk and damp, and old mills may have water rights or restrictions to clarify.
Stone houses on terraces may have co-owners or out-of-date registry entries. A geometra should check the cadastral maps, the building permits and the boundaries before you commit.
