Piombino is a port town at the southern end of the Etruscan Coast, in the Province of Livorno, facing the island of Elba across a narrow channel. It is the main ferry port for Elba, and the comune also includes the gulf of Baratti and the Etruscan site of Populonia.
The Town and the Coast
The old town stands on a promontory, with the Piazza Bovio terrace looking out over the sea to Elba, the old harbour of Marina and fortifications from the time of the Appiani lords. The town also has a long industrial history linked to its steelworks.
To the north of the town, the gulf of Baratti has a sandy beach backed by pine woods, and the hilltop village of Populonia overlooks the necropolis that is now an archaeological park. Inland are Campiglia Marittima and Suvereto, while San Vincenzo lies along the coast. Ferries cross to Elba for Rio and Capoliveri.
