Property for Sale in Scicli, Sicily
Scicli is a baroque town in south-eastern Sicily, in the Province of Ragusa, and one of the late baroque towns of the Val di Noto listed by UNESCO. Its comune runs down to the sea, and most of the homes for sale are in the countryside and along the coast.
The Town and the Coast
The town lies at the meeting of valleys beneath limestone cliffs, rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693 with churches and palazzi in golden stone, such as Palazzo Beneventano and the church of San Bartolomeo. The town hall became familiar to television viewers as the police station in the Inspector Montalbano series.
On the coast below are the seaside villages of Donnalucata, Cava d’Aliga, Sampieri and Playa Grande, with sandy beaches and dunes. The provincial capital, Ragusa, and the town of Modica are close by.

Everyday Life and Getting There
Scicli has shops, markets, schools and a hospital, and the coastal villages fill up in summer. Local food includes the cheeses, almonds and chocolate of the Ragusa area.
Comiso airport is the nearest, while Catania airport offers more flights. Roads link Scicli with Modica and Ragusa, and a car is needed to reach the countryside and beaches.
Buying in Scicli
South-eastern Sicily is a seismic area, so ask about the structure of older farmhouses and any certified works. Many rural properties rely on wells or tanks for water, so check supply and storage.
Coastal land is subject to building limits, and some houses near the sea were built or enlarged without permits. Get a geometra from the province to check every building against the land registry and the planning documents held by the comune.
