Above the compact old quarter of stone houses and lanes, the land rises through chestnut and beech woods towards the summit of the Amiata, an extinct volcano where there are ski slopes in winter and walking trails for the rest of the year. Within the comune, the hamlet of Montenero d’Orcia sits at the edge of the Montecucco wine country. Neighbouring Arcidosso is just along the road, while Cinigiano lies further down towards the Ombrone valley.
