Property for Sale in Fano, Le Marche

Fano is a seaside town on the Adriatic coast of northern Le Marche, in the Province of Pesaro and Urbino. It combines a Roman and medieval centre with long beaches, a fishing harbour and green hills rising just inland.

The Town and the Coast

Founded by the Romans as Fanum Fortunae, Fano still has its Arch of Augustus at the entrance to the old town, along with stretches of walls, Renaissance palaces and churches. Its carnival is one of the oldest in Italy. Sandy and pebble beaches stretch on both sides of the harbour.

Inland, the countryside climbs into rolling hills of farmland and villages along the Metauro valley. Pesaro lies a short way north along the coast, and Urbino is in the hills inland.

The listings include a modern family villa, a stone farmhouse in the hills and a large hillside estate with sea views near the coast. Prices sit in the upper range, from under €1 million for the villa to several million for the estate, and the listings cover the countryside around the town as well as Fano itself.

Everyday Life and Getting There

Fano has a hospital, schools, supermarkets, markets and a lively centre, and it is busy with beachgoers in summer. Fish dishes such as brodetto are a local speciality.

The town has a station on the Adriatic railway between Bologna and Ancona, and the A14 motorway has an exit at Fano. Ancona airport is the closest, with Bologna offering more international flights.

Buying in Fano

Near the sea, check for damp, salt damage and coastal building rules. In the hills, look at access roads in winter, water supply and drainage.

Le Marche is a seismic area, so ask for information on structural works carried out on older buildings. A geometra should go through the property’s paperwork, confirming that the cadastral plans, permits and any later changes are all in order.
