Fermo is a historic hill city a few kilometres inland from the Adriatic, the capital of the Province of Fermo in southern Le Marche. From its hilltop the views take in the sea on one side and the Sibillini mountains on the other.
The City and Its Countryside
The old town climbs to the Girfalco hill, where the cathedral stands in a park at the top. Below it, the arcaded Piazza del Popolo is the centre of city life, and beneath the streets are large Roman cisterns that can be visited. The city has a strong tradition of markets and summer festivals.
The surrounding countryside is a patchwork of farmland, olive groves and small hill villages, including Ponzano di Fermo and Petritoli inland. On the coast, Porto San Giorgio has the nearest beaches and marina.

The few listings here are country homes in the hills around the city: villas with pools and panoramic terraces, some with sea views, and a restored traditional house. Prices are in the upper-middle range, close to €1 million for the larger villas.
Everyday Life and Getting There
Fermo has a hospital, schools and a good range of shops, and Porto San Giorgio adds seaside life in summer. The region is known for its food, from olive oil to seafood and local wines.
The A14 motorway runs along the coast with an exit for Fermo and Porto San Giorgio, where there is also a station on the Adriatic railway. Ancona airport is the closest, and Pescara is an alternative for some routes.

Southern Le Marche was affected by the 2016 earthquakes, so ask whether a house suffered damage, whether repairs were carried out and whether they were certified. Rural homes may depend on septic tanks and long private access roads.
