Property for Sale in Greve in Chianti, Tuscany
Greve in Chianti is the main town of the Chianti Classico wine area in the Province of Florence, lying in the valley of the Greve river on the Chiantigiana road between Florence and Siena. Property here is mostly large country houses, villas and wine estates, and prices reflect the international demand for this part of Tuscany.
The Town and Its Piazza
The heart of Greve is Piazza Matteotti, an unusual triangular square lined with arcades, wine shops and restaurants, with a statue of the navigator Giovanni da Verrazzano at its centre. A weekly market is held in the square, and the town hosts a wine fair each September.
Just above the town, the tiny fortified village of Montefioralle keeps its ring of stone houses and narrow lanes, and offers some of the best views over the valley.
The Villages and Countryside of Greve
The comune is large and includes Panzano in Chianti, known for its butchers and its amphitheatre of vineyards, as well as Lamole, Strada in Chianti and many small hamlets and castles, including the Castello di Verrazzano. Much of the land is covered by vineyards, olive groves and oak woods.
To the north, Impruneta is known for its terracotta, and San Casciano in Val di Pesa and Barberino Tavarnelle lie to the west. Florence can easily be reached for a day in the city.

Most listings are farmhouses, often substantial stone buildings with several bedrooms, followed by villas, country estates with vineyards and the occasional apartment or village house. Many properties have pools, annexes or guest accommodation. Prices are high: few homes are below €1 million, most sit between about €1.2 million and €3 million, and the largest wine estates are priced well above €10 million.
Everyday Life and Getting There
Greve has supermarkets, a pharmacy, schools, banks and a good range of restaurants, while larger hospitals and specialist shops are in Florence. In summer the town is busy with visitors, cyclists and wine tourists.
The Chiantigiana runs through the town, linking it with Florence to the north and with Castellina in Chianti and Siena to the south. The A1 motorway is reached at Firenze Impruneta, and the nearest stations are in Florence. Florence airport is close, and Pisa airport has more international routes.
Buying in Greve in Chianti
Wine estates are businesses as well as homes, so look at the vineyard registrations, the right to use the Chianti Classico name, the cellar equipment and any staff contracts. Agricultural land may come with obligations if it has received grants.
The countryside is protected by landscape rules, which limit new buildings and alterations to old ones. Have a geometra work through the cadastral maps and building permits for each structure, including pools and annexes added over the years, and confirm that they are all legal before signing the preliminary agreement.
